How Dry Eye Disease Develops & How to Treat It

man with dry eye sneeze

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common eye condition that can happen either because the eye is not producing enough tears, or because tears are evaporating too quickly, leaving the eyes without enough moisture to function comfortably.

This can happen for several reasons including allergies, side effects from medications, hormonal changes, and illness.

Depending on the cause and exact symptoms of your dry eyes, our Castle Rock eye doctors will be able to prescribe treatments and medications aimed at increasing the amount of tears your eye produces and/or slowing the evaporation of tears to better hydrate your eyes.

What Are the Main Causes of Dry Eye?

  • Aging

Dry eye disease tends to affect people over the age of 50. This is because tear production slows as we age. As the lacrimal glands produce fewer tears, dry eye develops.

  • Hormonal changes

It's not uncommon for some women to experience dry eye symptoms during pregnancy, menopause, or while using birth control pills. That's because hormone imbalances can reduce tear production.

  • Autoimmune disease

Certain autoimmune diseases, like Sjögren’s syndrome, can cause white blood cells to attack your tear glands, thus reducing tear production. Other diseases like arthritis, lupus, and diabetes can also cause poor or insufficient tear production.

  • Medications

Certain medications can reduce mucus production (one of the 3 tear components) thus contributing to chronic dry eye.

They include antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, and beta-blockers.

Note that this is just a handful of causes. There are many other factors that can contribute to dry eye, including pollution and dry air, allergies, poor tear quality, dehydration, contact lens wear, and more.

I was amazed how attentive, friendly and helpful everyone was! Really enjoyed talking with Dr. Ryan... and he was very thorough and friendly. Was very pleased with the variety of glasses to choose from. Angela helped me and ensured I was happy with our choices on my glasses. She spent so much time with me helping me pick out my glasses and double checking all her measurements for my progressives. I have never experienced this quality of care in eye wellness, thank you!

Angela is absolutely incredible and went above and beyond to secure a doctor’s exam and beautiful ... eye glasses for both my daughter and myself. Angela even stayed later so my daughter could take her time choosing glasses. We have been going here for years and Angela is always so positive, genuine and helpful. She is wonderful and it is because of her we keep continue coming back every year.

The Meadows Family Eye Care is our new place for eye care! We moved to Castle Rock from Denver and n... eeded a new Optometrist. My husband and I were both impressed with the level of care from both Drs, the thoroughness of our exams, the qualified, friendly staff and the eye glass choices for any budget. You will not be disappointed choosing the Meadows Family Eye Care as your new eye care facility. We are certainly happy we found both Dr. Reids!

This place is 5+ Stars. It's a beautiful and comfortable environment where everyone is friendly and ... makes you feel welcome. The doctors (the Reids) are amazing. They take the time to explain EVERYTHING. They have recruited Opticians with 20+ years experience. They didn't skimp on customer service and the price is comparable to other places in town. My daughter couldn't be happier with her new glasses. Keep up the great work!

Their professionalism, and genuine concern for every aspect of patient care is above reproach! After... receiving the highest level of care during my recent visit, I had a transportation emergency. Regrettably, their names escape me, but the optician and several other staff members went ABOVE and BEYOND to assist me. I was deeply touched by their level of dedication, kindness, and it is for these reasons that I HIGHLY recommend this dedicated eye care team!

This place is amazing. From the first smiling faces you see when you walk through the door, to the w... hole exam team. I was completely comfortable and relaxed the entire time. Nothing felt intrusive or uncomfortable. And they got me in and out and I felt completely taken care of. 10/10 would recommend! This is the eye clinic for you 😊

I have been going here for a few years now and have been very happy. Both Dr. Maia and Dr. Ryan are... very professional and personable. They are patient when examining my children and have provided the best care for me and my families vision. With 4 children who all have different vision needs they haven’t missed a beat with providing the best options for all our needs, they answer all my questions and are both very easy to communicate with. The office staff is friendly and professional. And the new technology they have brought in is top notch!!!

Update: changing my 4 star review because they are a business that wants to do what it takes to earn... my business. They called me after I left this review and we had a great discussion on my experience. I do hope that the feedback was taken and that the owners are able to take a step and evaluate priorities and take care of their staff (if that's what's needed). My experience with the Meadows family eye care was okay, not great. In short the 4 stars goes to whoever was working in the front desk...she was awesome and very professional. Most other staff made me feel rushed especially when I had questions around the fit and additional contact lens testing. My doctor was very nice and also very professional. The stars go to my doctor and the staff member working at the front desk!

Dry Eyes FAQs

Can I still wear contact lenses if I have dry eye syndrome?

Yes, some people can still wear contact lenses with dry eye syndrome. However, depending on its severity, you may need to carefully select the adequate contact lens for optimal clarity and comfort.

Oftentimes, because contact lenses sit on the eye, it's difficult for vital oxygen to reach the eye. This can worsen dry eye symptoms, and increase the risk of scratching or otherwise damaging your eye. Make sure to ask your eye doctor which contact lenses are most adapted to your condition.

Can dry eye syndrome be cured?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for dry eye syndrome. There are, however, many treatment options that offer lasting dry eye relief.

Can dry eye syndrome cause blindness?

In rare extreme cases, dry eye syndrome can cause corneal ulcers. These ulcers can result in scarring on the eye, making it difficult for the cornea to focus light accurately. If left untreated, corneal ulcers and the associated scarring can result in blindness.

How can I prevent dry eye symptoms?

Below are a few tips that will help prevent dry eye symptoms:

  • Point fans, heaters, and air vents so that they don’t directly blow into your eyes
  • Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Stay properly hydrated
  • Take breaks during long tasks, especially those that require extended visual focus
